Jaques Saly and the Equestrian Statue of Frederick V,Copenhagen

The Bronze Equestrian Statue of Frederick V,
at the Amalienborg Palace,
Jaques Francois Joseph Saly (1717 -76).
Cast 2nd March 1768 by Pierre Gors and unveiled 7 July 1771.

Height 12 metres.

Saly published two reports on his statue:

Jaques Francois Joseph Saly (1717 -76).

For a very useful brief biog of Saly see -

Saly was born in Valenciennes to Francois Marie Saly and his wife Marie Michelle.
After studying with Guillaume Coustou in Paris, in 1738 Saly won the first prize for sculpture and at the end of 1740 went to the French Academy in Rome where he worked with Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain. He got to know Piranesi who had just arrived from Venice whose passion for Roman antiquities he admired.
His Vases, produced in 1746 and dedicated to the De Troy, director of French Academy, show the strong influence of Piranesi. On his return to France in 1751 he was admitted to Académie Royale.

However Saly interpreted the Classical / Rococo in a very personal manner merging the classical art of this contemporaries with the renaissance tradition of the “grotesque” in which vegetables, animals and marine deities blend elegantly and harmoniously.

These prints are the most fantastic and inventive etching of the time in the tradition which began in the 16th century with Enea Vico, 
In 1753 left for Copenhagen to work there for the Royal Family. When he returned to France he was given a studio at the Louvre.

A general on Horseback - Hubert Le Sueur - with Tomasso Brothers

This unpublished statuette is an interesting addition to the growing catalogue of work byHubert Le Sueur, court sculptor – as he himself boasted – to two kings, Louis XIII of France and Charles I of England and Scotland. Unfortunately, it has no meaningful provenance and the identity of the armoured rider is unknown.

The horse, the saddle and the armoured body are identical to those of two other casts which have the heads of King Louis XIII as a youth and of King Philip of Spain, both now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, nos. A.1–1994 and A.108-1956. Of these, the former has Le Sueur’s name stamped on the girth, and this was crucial for establishing his authorship not just of these small equestrian figures, but of a much larger pair also in the Victoria andAlbert Museum (inv. nos. A. 47 and A 49–1951). One of the latter shows Louis XIII on a virtually identical mount, though the larger scale has permitted more modelling of detail.There is also a bronze of Charles I on a steed leaping above a crouching, defeated foe,which has come to light more recently (inv. no. A.1–1992; see Bresc-Bautier and Scherf 2009,pp. 176–77, no. 44, with earlier literature).
